sunday news - week of july 25, 2010 WELCOME KAREN PEPPERS! AUGUST 15TH IS LOAVES AND FISHES SUNDAY. On August 15 we will have our annual ingathering of food to help restock the food pantry of Feed My Sheep Ministries, the homeless shelter in Glenwood. This is our church's way of participating in the state-wide Loaves and Fishes Sunday sponsored by our Diocese. Karen Peppers, Director of Feed My Sheep, is here today to tell us about their ministry. Grocery bags with attached shopping lists are available in the narthex. Please bring your contributions only on Sunday 8/15. If for some reason you won’t be attending services on 8/15, you can make a donation by check. Please make your checks payable to Christ Church, noting “Feed My Sheep” in the memo line. Thank you! NEXT SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: BISHOP WILL WILLIMON. Invite your friends to join us next Saturday and Sunday for the 2010 installment of our renewed “Great Preachers and Teachers Series”. The Rev. Dr. William H. Willimon, Methodist bishop, author of 62 books, former Dean of the Chapel at Duke University, and one of the dozen greatest preachers in America, will be with us. Bishop Willimon will offer a talk, followed by question and answer time, in the church at 7 pm on Saturday, July 31, and will preach at both 8 and 10 am services the following Sunday morning. FIRST SUNDAY BREAKFAST NEXT SUNDAY. Please join us next Sunday for our monthly First Sunday Breakfast, between the services at 9:00 a.m. in Rowland-Davis Hall. PLEASE SIGN UP TO SPONSOR SUMMER MUSIC! We are so fortunate to have the summer music students available to share their talents with us. If you would like to sponsor summer music at the 10:00 service ($75), please sign up on the bulletin board in the hallway. Here are the available dates:
CHRIST CHURCH RECEIVES ARCHITECTURE AWARD. Faith and Form Magazine and the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art, and Architecture have announced a 2010 Merit Award for Christ Church in the category of Religious Architecture – Renovation. Congratulations to our outstanding architectural firm, Studio B. MUSIC SUNDAY ON AUGUST 8th. Our annual tradition continues with a performance of J. S. Bach's Cantata No. 82 on Sunday, August 8 at the 10:00 a.m. service. The cantata, which is scored for voice and chamber orchestra, will feature local baritone Scott MacCracken, an AMFS student string quartet, and Jamie Roberts on oboe. (Jamie performed as part of "Music Sunday" last year.) NOOMA SERIES CONTINIUES THIS MORNING. Sunday Morning Adult Ed. continues in the Community Room immediately after the 8:00 service, with another of the popular NOOMA series of short (12-15 min.) videos for group discussion, featuring Rob Bell. These were very popular in the Lenten Study Series, and participants expressed a wish to see more of them. Today we will feature a presentation entitled Shells. Here is an introduction by Rob Bell: “Do you often find yourself saying, ‘I’m too busy”? or “I just have so much to do?” It’s easy to get overwhelmned… But what are we really doing with our lives? There are so many good things to do, so manmy good causes to join. But while we’re so busy, are we missing out on something great? Maybe saying “No” would be easier if we knew what it meant to say “Yes”. DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL JULY 31! WE WILL ADD UP TO 100 NEW PAVERS TO THE PAVER WALK. We are open to taking orders for up to 100 new pavers this summer, at $125 each, which includes installation. Paver flyers are on the credenza in the narthex. We can order only 29 more pavers. For further information call Deacon Joan McNab, 925-5156. “FAITH AND FILM” CONTINUES ON August 4. Our next “Faith and Film” evening will be especially pleasurable for families with children – though equally interesting for adults. On Wed., August 4, at 6:00 we will watch and discuss the animated film, The Iron Giant. This gentle reworking of Ted Hughes's 1968 novella was the unseen gem of 1999. Hogarth, a young boy who lives in the Maine woods during the cold war, befriends a giant robot. As with E.T., the iron giant is a misunderstood outsider who becomes a child's best friend, and Hogarth does his best to hide the massive figure from his mom (voiced by Jennifer Aniston) and the local scrap-yard beatnik (Harry Connick Jr.). Soon the suspicions of neighbors and a government agent (Christopher McDonald) spell trouble. Sign up for Faith and Film on the poster outside Rowland-Davis Hall. $5 for the movie and pizza. Future Faith and Film evenings will be on Aug. 18 (Good Will Hunting), Sept. 1 (TBA), and Sept. 15 (TBA). 3 DELEGATES HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FOR DIOCESAN CONVENTION. Betsy and Dave Ratcliff and Neal Batson will be Christ Church’s three lay delegates to the Annual Convention of the Diocese of Colorado, which meets in Denver, Oct. 7-9. Fr. Bruce and Deacon Joan will also be attending the Convention as clergy delegates. WEEKDAY BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES TOMORROW. Fr. Bruce’s weekday intensive Bible study continues on Mondays at 3:30 pm in the Community Room with a study of the Gospel according to Luke. Members of the class are expected to buy and use a commentary. SPECIAL SUMMER MUSIC AND ALTAR FLOWERS. If you would like to make an offering for altar flowers or summer music, please sign up on the bulletin board outside of Rowland-Davis Hall. Checks should be made payable to “Christ Church” with “Flower Fund” or “Music Fund” in the memo line. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kathy Klug (7/25), Wendy Blakeslee (7/27), Michael Blakeslee (7/28), Joan McNab (7/28) HAPPY ANNIVERSARY Judy & Bruce Schwartz (7/29)
